Greenfield co-op swimmers capture Craig Relays crown
Veterans led the way for the Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI boys swimming team in a busy and successful opening week.
The PG-squared team, as head coach Dale Schrank calls it, won the Cougar Relays at Janesville Craig on Dec. 3, tallying 184 points to beat Janesville Parker's 158 points in a six-team meet.
The co-op squad won six of the 12 relay races and earned medals in three more events in defending its championship in the meet.
"We had a number of really impressive swims with some of our newer swimmers, and the veterans stepped up and did what they needed to do," Schrank said.
A pair of freshmen, Colin Hassel (Greenfield) and David Turner (Greendale), posted personal-best efforts, including Turner's backstroke split of 1 minute, 7.01 seconds to earn swimmer of the meet honors from the coaching staff.
The veteran swimmers, who teamed for those six relay victories, include junior team captains Ben Davis (Greenfield), Isaac Jiardini (Pius XI) and Steve Novinska (Greendale), along with junior Harrison Stasik (Greendale), junior Carmelo Patti (Greendale) and sophomore Jackson Zgola (Greendale).
Also contributing on winning relays were sophomore Ryan Haessly (Pius XI), junior Dominic Cory (Greendale), senior Brandon Washburn (Greenfield) and senior Matt Ballman (Greendale).
Greenfield/Greendale/Pius XI downed Woodland Conference foe New Berlin, 112-70, in a dual meet on Nov. 30.
Haessly posted a personal best in the 200-yard freestyle, and Hassel and Patti did the same in the 50 freestyle for the local swimmers, who won all but one swimming event and took two of three relays.
"Again, we had a number of swimmers recording personal bests, which is kind of surprising this early in the season," the coach said.
The team opened the season with second place in a triangular on Nov. 22, scoring 109 points to trail Muskego with 138 and beat Watertown with 56.
Zgola had victories and personal bests in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, Davis won the 100 butterfly, Jiardini took the 200 IM and sophomore Bharat Kothapalli (Greendale), Turner and Stasik posted personal bests.
"Swimmers from Greendale were missing due to band conflicts with the Macy's parade in New York, but we came very close to toppling one of the giants in the area (Muskego)," Schrank said.
